A touching and tender story. It explores family relationships in 1950s Sudan, on the brink of its independence from the UK and Egypt. Aboulela offers just enough background and contextual information to keep the book from being incomprehensible to Western readers, but her style is simple and lyrical without wasting words on explanations of African/Muslim culture.
