I read a review of Big Machine that likens the author to Ralph Ellison/Thomas Pinchon. Well, I agree, the concept is a mix of those. For me, it was just a little too suspenseful, too many plot twists, revelations, and science-fictiony. I didn't mind delving into theology somewhat, but I wasn't really in the mood to read about it. The social history of nut jobs who do crazy things when provoked was interesting, but not riveting enough for 3 stars. It might be fun for someone to read who grew up in Oakland, as quite a bit of plot happens around there.
