This book takes on some incredibly weighty issues, especially considering it is targeted for a young adult audience. The freshman protagonist struggles to communicate with those around her--her parents, her peers, and her teachers--after living through a life-shattering event. Abandoned by her friends because of misunderstanding, she battles her way through her first year of high school. Despite the intense themes, Anderson does a good job of providing some comedic relief. The book is well-written, with plenty of wit and pithiness. I only give it three stars because, like many young adult books, there are some elements, particularly related to interactions among characters and reactions to specific occurrences, that a reader not-to-far-removed from adolescence just won't buy.
