Engaging and informative about the role that individual personalities and inter-service rivalries inevitably play in making decisions during war that affect the lives of thousands. I was unaware of the Japanese ethos of being a chosen race at this time, just like the Nazis, as well as how pervasive in their culture was the belief that it is noble to die for the emperor--quite a cult of death. Ultimately the book became too detailed to continue to be engaging.
