This well-researched historical fiction follows a young london girl as she runs off to join Florence Nightengale's nurses in the Crimean War. Between mundane travel scences and gory hospital scence, a love-triangle subplot is interwoven - which takes a surprisingly tragic turn near the end. Halfway through, the author introduces unexplained supernatural elements, which did not add anything to the story. The plot had some weak points, but for fans of historical fiction, this book will give them the joy of traveling to another era.
