Popular Justice: A History of Lynching in America by Manfred Berg (Ivan R. Dee 2011)(364.134) is an interesting history. A sheriff - jailer named W.T. Cate from Knox County, Tennessee in August 1921 backed down a mob that had come to lynch a prisoner when he literally "drew a line in the sand." (p. 157). My rating: 6/10, finished 8/31/11.
