I give this 5 stars, even though it is not exactly true to say that I "loved" this book. It was creepy and disturbing. But it was utterly fascinating. Capote is the creator of such characters as Holly Golightly. It is difficult to transition him into the artist of such a dark and sinister canvas.

The book is a well written time machine that transports the reader to 1959 middle America, to bear witness to the shocking and brutal murders of a father, mother, son and daughter. We are there for it all and the result is a cacophony of absolute beauty, bottomless despair and sheer horror.

This book will leave you with a staggering sense of unease. It will get under your skin and worry you like a splinter. And it will have you checking your doors at night.

Linda I read In Cold Blood back in the sixties (I was a teenager) and can still recall how utterly chilling it was. It brought me to the realization that I would never truly be safe anywhere, at any time, ever again. Horrible.
