A great book group read, though not a personal favorite. This scathing satire from one of the great Irish modernists lambasts Ireland's late-19th century Gaelic language revival and any who trafficked in romanticizing the dire poverty of the Irish countryside. We had a great discussion about the book, especially about satire and humor and the debilitating, isolating effects of poverty -- with some interesting touches on Frank McCourt. (It was impossible not to think of him; I wonder what he thought of this book? I have to believe he loved it.)
