bookshelves: childhood-favorites

I love all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, but this one and Little Town on the Prairie hold a special place in my heart. As I child, this was probably my least favorite of her books. It seemed boring--after all, the book consists of month after month of darkness and cold. How interesting could that be?

It was only on rereading The Long Winter as an adult that I realized how close the Ingalls family and their neighbors came to starving to death. Laura manages to convey this without getting maudlin or syrupy or playing the victim. This is a fascinating book.
