In Bed with a Highlander by Maya Banks
Historical Romance – Aug. 30th, 2011
4 ½ stars

Mairin is on the run. The illegitimate daughter of a king, she has a wealthy inheritance
that men will murder and scheme to have for their own. When she is forcefully taken from her peaceful convent, she fears the worst. Beaten but still fierce, she plots her escape against impossible odds. She only has some protection because the attackers’ leader, Laird Cameron wants her virtue intact and her body relatively unharmed. On the journey to Laird Cameron's home, Mairin befriends a young boy named Crispin and protects him. But unbeknownst to her, Cripsin is the son of the brawny and protective Laird Ewan McCabe. Both Crispin and Mairin are rescued and brought back to Ewan. However Ewan is suspicious of Mairin especially since she will not reveal her identity and wants to leave them. Ewan inexplicably feels drawn to Mairin and when he discovers her heritage, he finds marrying her will be no hardship...

However, Mairin is a prize and when Laird Cameron pledges war with the backing of the King. Ewan must decide if his new found love for Mairin is worth the cost.

This a sweeping highland romance that Scottish fans will adore. The hero will do what ever it takes to keep Mairin. And Mairin will also fight for her rights and those she cares about even if it costs her. I really liked Mairin's courage as she plots to escape and protects the young Crispin even if it means she will pay by being beaten. Her courage, beauty and intelligence make her a heroine that romance readers will love to read. As with all Maya Banks novels, Ewan is a true alpha, his one 'weak' spot is the woman he has come to love. In this story, he risks all for Mairin and that is all what romance is about. Although he is logical, his passion and eventual devotion to Mairin are heartwarming to read. I also enjoyed reading about Ewan's brother Alaric and the headstrong tomboy Rionna. While not as erotic as some of her other books, this story still packs a lot of heat as Ewan can't keep his hands (or his heart) from Mairin. I also liked the relationship Mairin forges between Ewan's son, Crispin. He is very precocious and needed a woman's touch. It would be great if the author might write a story about Cripsin when he grows up?! As mentioned earlier, I was fascinated by Rionna and her sword welding skills. I can't wait to read her book with Alaric!

Lovers of sweeping highland romances will not be disappointed in this series.
