For someone that I associate with Westerns and such, this was a surprising slice of near-future depression. After seeing "No Country For Old Men" I'm not as surprised, though. It reminded me of Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker and indeed could be an early time on that track. The language of the book itself reflects the breakdown of the old disciplines, the old ways. Satisfying.
