Like most folk I had first read Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. I enjoyed that even more than I expected I would so I sought out this his first book, which apparently brought him some acclaim at the time.

I thought it started well and the account of his supposed time with Typee was quite diverting. However the ending was a bit perfunctory and the tacked on appendix and sequel did not grip me as a reader and simply did not sit well with the rest of the book. Still I think there was enough there to make me seek out more Melville.
