I was never a huge fan of the cartoon and you couldn't drag me to the movie (seriously; I'm pretty big), but I've always heard good things about Peyo's original comic. Turns out, those good things were justified.

The book reminded me of a tremendous, long-form version of the Casper stories I enjoyed as a kid: Lots of fun and funny characters in a forest fantasy world, sometimes indirectly learning lessons through their adventures. Gargamel (always my favorite character from the cartoon) doesn't even appear in the first, longer story in this volume, but I didn't miss him. Turns out, the Smurfs can be plenty entertaining on their own.
