it was amazing
Read from January 01, 1995 to August 29, 2011

Reading this was a work in very slow progress over 10 years or so,
but the pace picked up in 2011. Now that I know how it turns out,
or rather, doesn't turn out, I'll just re-read more patiently, for
the next 10 years or so. The last 600 pages (of the 1800 total) are
posthumous fragments suggesting the author's ideas about how to
finish it, truly fascinating to read, and easier than following the
multiple threads (heavy ropes) in the finished part of the story.
He says, among his final notes, "It is not an easy and not a difficult
book, for that depends entirely upon the reader." The story is set in
Austria in 1913 and was written and rewritten up until the author's
death left it unfinished in the early 1940's.
