3.5 out of 5 stars

Just like the first two books in the series, I found myself rather enthralled. The world here is so fantastic. I just love it. Very creative and for the most part, detailed enough that I "buy" it. I love that.

The primary characters continued to be well handled. I will say that Jace's birthright mystery did get a little tedious there by the end. It was almost like... oh, well, now he's THIS guy's kid. I'd have liked a little less drama re: that plot line.

But Jace as a character. Gah. Loved him. He was fantastic and had a lot of depth. And I really liked Clary. It's rare I can say that about a female protag written by a female. I realize that sounds terrible considering I am a woman. But too often I find way too much self insertion. Or worse, I find that the author infuses the female lead with TOO MUCH awesomeness, to the point where I can't buy any of the risk or conflict.

I have to say, too, that there were a few coincidences in this book that I had to purposefully tell myself to ignore and suspend disbelief - things that happened just in the nick of time a little too often for my taste. I found this to be the case with this book more so than the first two, which was a little disappointing. But I liked both the series and this book enough and the too-favorable coincidences weren't egregious enough to make me not stop reading.

The writing could definitely use some work. It's not that it's bad. It's just not anything to get excited over. It's simple (and as such reads fast). I prefer a little more complexity in the writing I read. But again, it wasn't bad, especially for typical YA reading level.

So...

General plot = B+/A-
Execution of plot = B
Setting/world created = A
Characters = B overall, A for Clary/Jace
Writing mechanics/sophistication = C/C-
Style/narration = B (thank you for the 3rd person)

All in all a very fun little series. Lightning quick reads, too.
