Read from August 29 to September 03, 2011

Having seen the movie first, I picked up the book because I wanted more background on each of the story threads portrayed in the movie. I read more than half of the book and realized that the movie makers had combed through the book and developed narratives that barely exist. Perhaps it is a poor translation, but this book did not strike me as a masterpiece. At times, the prose was little more than a listing names, and the efforts towards a transcendent style left me baffled. Of course the author deserves about 12 stars for bravery, but I could not force myself to finish this book.
