I didn't really like the main character, Alyssa, but I think her situation is more common in high schools than I know. Alyssa finds herself kicked out of her home when her lesbian relationship with her girlfriend, Sarah, is discovered by her father. She's sent to live with her mother, Carly, in Colorado, far from her friends and family. I was not convinced that Carly was a good influence on her daughter, not because she's a stripper but because she doesn't seem to have a mothering bone in her body. Alyssa spends a great deal of time by herself, gets herself a job, and drives her mother's cars - but can't seem to get herself a pair of shoes.

What gives this book an edge is that it might be a good addition to the collection for gay teens. I suspect they'll identify with Alyssa's angst as well as her difficulties trying to live with the reality of her homosexuality. I liked that she was a fairly "normal" teen and hadn't gone down the goth path or was self-destructive. I like that the parts relating to sex were mostly lacking in detail but gave the reader a appreciation of their love for each other. These may be very validating for teens trying to be gay in a straight world.

Alyssa is whiney, but her father is a jerk. The characters of Sarah and Ben are just teens being totally self-absorbed. Overall, not a great read but not bad in that it might be just the book that helps someone identify with a lesbian character on the written page in a somewhat positive light.
