A very strong 3 stars. This is a quick read, but it definitely packs a punch. Jackson Pearce takes on some very heavy ideas/themes in this novel, but she does a good job of it. Despite focusing on religion and purity I don't really feel like this was preachy in any way. It left things open for readers to examine for themselves what they feel or think, and I appreciated that. I think there could have been a bit more character development with Shelby's religious background for us as readers to understand her philosophizing about religion and God, because sometimes it came off as a bit random. And Shelby's promises may seem far-fatched at times, but on the other hand I think you can understand them as the one thing she's done to keep her mother's memory alive. Overall this is a very heartfelt book, and that's what I appreciated about it.
