Second Review (Dec 2014): I hadn't picked this up since I first read it in 2011. So much resonance.

First Review (Aug 2011): As a foundational text of contemporary graphic novels, I had high hopes for this novel and it didn't disappoint. The story was not at all what I had expected, but was incredibly relatable. Thompson writes and draws phenomenally well, and has a eye/ear for juxtaposing past/present, dream/reality in word and picture that causes the characters and story to spring alive. I may have to pick up my own copy, as this is one I'll want to reread and lend out.
