I really like this Australian writer yet I found this novel a little dissapointing. I have read some of her short stories and marvelled at the way she creates worlds from long ago. Yet I did not want to stay in this world too long; it was claustrophobic and too dark for me. The story is harrowing; incest and falling in love with a bear.. well not really; she reworks an actual medieval peasant coming of age tradition where the boys dress up in bear skins and playfully terrorise the village; kiss the girls etc. Except in this story the bear falls from one dimension into another and becomes real....The falling between worlds would appeal to those of you who like fantasy but there are some scenes that I found hard to stomach. interesting but not my favourite from her.
