It seems that every fantasy writer that releases a multi-volume opus attempts to lay claim to Tolkien's legacy. However, I think Martin's work comes closest to capture the breadth and scale of Tolkien's master work. With respect to the depth of the story, I think Martin exceeds Tolkien. The multiple levels of intrigue, the brutal realism with which he deals with life, death, and struggle leave the reader feeling has if s/he has experienced the events along with the charater. If you are a fan of fantasy epics, these books are worth your time.
