A triumph of style over substance, Clover was CLAMP's experimental foray, and it really shows. The plot is practically inexistent, the characters entirely one-dimensional (if that), and the writing darn insipid (particularly obvious through CLAMP's experimenting with the use of repetition). But the art is beautiful: their take on sci-fi steampunk design is a welcome addition to the well-mined genre, and the most surprising part of Clover is the use of paneling and white space. Sure, it's in service of a story that is generic at best, and in its unfinished state (Clover stands at four volumes but the creative team had intended two more), just plain distractingly nonsensical. But the art is well worth a look-see if you have a chance. Rating: 2 stars
