The Wedding almost seemed like it was specifically written for me to hate - and it's been a long time since I've disliked a book this much. There's no real art to it (people are "white as paper" and so forth), but it's written for people who don't exactly have alternative lifestyles or world views. The baby boomer housewife married her husband because he respected her desire to be a housewife at a time when "most people our age wanted to change the world," and she knew he'd be a good provider. As someone who eloped (and really upset her mother), I flinched when the wife freaked out just because her daughter wanted a small wedding (and says she would be horrified if her daughter had eloped).

The entire book is devoted to wedding plans - the narrator will say something like "I spent the afternoon in my den making calls for the wedding" and then DETAIL them (called the sheetrock guy, who said...called the gardener, who said...). These are conversations that bore me in real life, so why would I want to read them in a book I'm ostensibly reading for pleasure???

And it is so over-the-top - the daughter asks her mom to be her matron of honor, and then there's a twist at the end that is impossible to believe would ever happen. Still, there are folks that will love this book despite its sappiness, and I don't want to rain on their parade more than I already have.

Sotojorene I completely disagree that this book was written for individuals who don't "have alternative lifestyles or world views." I have 3 advanced degrees from very well-respected schools. I've lived all over the world and would consider myself somewhat "wordly," but I can certainly accept this book for what it is at face value. To criticize this book just because it portrays a very traditional American lifestyle in which the husband is a workaholic lawyer and the wife is a stay-at-home mom turned empty nester homemaker is, in and of itself, closeminded and not very "wordly." Besides, the author actually appears to question the approprietness of such a traditional American lifestyle because the main character nearly loses his wife because of it. If the reader accepts this book for its message (ie. people and relationships first, then jobs) and doesn't get bogged down in over-analyzing it, he or she will enjoy this fairly well-crafted love story.

Johann O. I also disagree. This book was written to anticipate the ending. Nicholas Sparks tries to get the reader to continue on mention his plan to try to regain the love his wife once had for him. At times he is a bit repetitive. Other wise this book is outstanding , 5 stars!

Nicole Um. Okay....this book was Actually really good. If you hated it so much, why did you even read all the way to the end?

Hannah I also disagree. If you began to think that the book was "meant for you to hate" then why would you 1.) read it in the first place and 2.) continue reading it once you began?

Jen I was stuck on an airplane.

Margaret There is something sappy and wrong in this book. I thought I was going to like this book, but I did not. And why do I hate Jane so much??

Ashlee I really enjoyed the book. I was shocked at the end, because I never saw the twist and turns coming when the wedding is switched up a bit. I also loved when Noah found his way down a steep bank to the waters edge. Wilson had a hard time getting down there in his age, and Noah whos much older and unsteady found his way just fine. This is one of Nicholas Sparks' better books if you ask me. But to each their own, sorry you didn't like it...maybe you'll enjoy the next one by him, if you choose to read it. I actually love descriptive writing when an author narrates what specifically a character is doing. You said those things bore you in real life, but I enjoy when NS narrates his characters actions because it makes the character seem more life-like and it makes it easier for the reader (well, for me) to relate to the character.

Phyllis Gross I enjoy all Nicholas Sparks' works. I look forward to reading it.

Deyna I don't agree! I really enjoyed this book, but then again everyone has their own point of views :)

Melissa I did enjoy this book also, like many of Nicolaus Sparks books. He's a true romantic. It was very surprising with all the everyday dialog and all. But that's what make's it so real. I love stories about real people. And that's what he write's about. So, all in all, I'd say I really enjoyed it!!!

Sabrina Robinson I agree with you completly. I normally love Sparks, but this dragged and had no real plot progression. I found myself just wanting the book to end so I could read something else. I ended up only reading half of it because I got so bored.

Vikki And what is wrong with people who don't have alternative lifestyles? As far as world views, it just wasn't that kind of book. Maybe you should read political books instead. I loved this book. No one saved the world or did anything bizarre, but that's okay sometimes.
