There are flashes of great writing in this book, which is the only by Lessing that I've read. She has a great sense of place that animates her vision of colonial Africa. Her heroine, though, was uniformly frustrating. While her teenage angst was realistic, it was irritating in its domination of the book. Lessing does way too much telling--we hear every thought in Martha's head, and they're mostly naive, melodramatic thoughts. A little more subtlety and obliqueness would have made Martha's growing pains easier to take. I just got really tired of her making bad decision after bad decision--I might have felt more sympathy for a character I cared about more, but here I was just happy to be shut of her.
