Far more moral than The Lord of the Rings, and far more perceptive about the ways of politics and war, this series insists on our awareness of complex feelings and motives. The jarring necessity of looking over the shoulders of a variety of characters, or getting adjusted to those characters and having them destroyed because of their mistakes or the treachery of others, leaves us disoriented and often unfulfilled. However we are always interested in the characters and fascinated by the plot that moves in many turns toward an inexorable conclusion. This series is not for those who do not readily remember characters.
