I was thoroughly impressed with this book; Conze knows his subject immensely well, and it is written in such a way that it can be appreciated by those with no knowledge, some familiarity, or a broad understanding of Buddhism. It is at once concise and quite exhaustive, and (insofar as I am able to verify) is highly accurate.

The only problem here is that the book was written, I believe, in the 70s, though this is a reissue. Because of this, some of the terms are inconsistent with contemporary usage, and it doesn't take into account what has been learned in the field in the intervening decades. Nonetheless, I would recommend it to anyone curious about the subject; I know of few books better suited to both the general reader and the specialist.
