Have you ever had your head cut off? Well Hansel and Gretal had this happen. Their father cut off their heads, but fortunately their heads were returned to them. This is just one bloody thing that happens to the pair in this metafiction tale. Different Brothers Grimm tales are intertwined to take the reader of a journey of self-discovery for Hansel and Gretel in A Tale Dark & Grimm (Dutton Children’s Books 2010) by Adam A. Gidwitz. The book has a great opening line, “Once upon a time, fairy tales were awesome.” The author shows that actions have consequences. The narrator adds to the fun of reading this book with his commentary and warns the reader about what is to come. The narration changes as the book goes along. This would be a great selection for a reluctant middle school reader who can handle a little blood and gore. The book is being considered for the 2012 Lone Star Reading List. It is also one of the 2011 Notable Children’s Books for middle readers.
