Read a review of Ms. Evans book in Essence magazine and knew I wanted to check it out. It is a series of stories about the "brown" experience. What I love most about it was it's complete lack of stereotypes. The characters were just who they were I felt as though I went to H.S./college and grew up in the hood with them.

There are several different themes touched on such as identity, family, sexuality. And perhaps my favorite vignette was about a smart girl leaving her cheerleader uniform behind and being torn between being herself and being part of a friendship. (Hit close to home.)

Excellent read!
