I know Steve Earle as a songwriter and an actor on the HBO miniseries Treme. The characters in his book are drug pushers, heroin addicts, prostitutes and the ghost of Hank Williams. They all live in a seedy neighborhood in San Antonio, Texas. I love the way the author blurs the line between good and evil. You never know when those with saintly intentions have no empathy in their hearts or what miracles can spring from those who struggle to survive on the fringes of society. I liked the story very much but, unfortunately, Earles writing style didn’t work well for me. I found it difficult to get through the book. There seems to be a lot of narrative that acts as filler and doesn’t really move the story along. I’m glad that I read the book but it wasn’t an easy read for me.
