Angela Carter is a master storyteller. In this collection of short stories, she reimagines familiar folktales and legends in a wonderfully twisted, highly sensual, and often bloody (though never gratuitously) fashion. Her heroines are refreshingly active. They are decisive, aware of their bodies and their surroundings, and fully capable of acting on their own. Carter's language is simultaneously distanced and reserved and bold and ornate. Her writing is nothing short of beautiful. If you read nothing else in this collection, you must read "The Company of Wolves." It is more than worth it for the lyrical synopsis of werewolf folklore alone, to say nothing of the retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.
