This was a really difficult book for me to read. You read about the first half of the civil rights movement through the eyes of several characters... African Americans, white activists, Klan members, etc. It was both eye opening and alarming for me. I knew that there was a considerable amount of Klan activity, but I had no idea how widely sanctioned it was. It gave me an entirely new appreciation of how brave those who participated in the movement actually were. Oh, and if you're looking for a nicely packaged ending, look again...
