It's hard to believe it has been 10 yrs since 9-11. There are a slew of books out right now focusing on the anniversary of the tragedy. I did enjoy this one - although it makes your stomach turn just to think of 9-11 again. Overall, however, this is not a depressing story but rather an inspirational one. The author, Michael Hingson, is a blind man who was working on the 78th floor of the WTC the morning of 9-11 along with his seeing eye dog, Roselle. The story takes you through the harrowing experience of that day and through Michael's experiences growing up blind. Roselle helped save Michael's life by leading him down 78 flights of stairs that morning. Michael also talks about how he heard the voice of God that morning when he thought the tower was going to fall on him as they ran to escape from the falling building in the streets. He asked God - "Why would you help me get down all the stairs just so that the tower would fall on us?" If you want to know God's reply, you will have to read the book! :) He really makes an effort as well to bring awareness to what it is like to be blind and how the blind wants to be treated by people who can see. He talked about how empowered blind people are today and that how really the only two jobs they can not do at this point are professional athletics and race car driving. Although it makes me really sad to remember the tragedy of 9-11... and read about the experiences of someone who was there... and think of all those who were killed that day... it also made me have a better understanding of what it is like to be blind, and it highlights just how awesome seeing eye dogs are! I have always wanted to be a puppy raiser for Paws with A Cause and this book makes me want to do that even more :)
