it was amazing

What really made this interesting was the obvious tension between action and scholarship in the narrative of the Church. One chapter might start out by comparing the style of various gospels to figure out their authorship. Then, wham! the next page jumps to horrific accounts of the deaths of martyrs- how they were beaten and bathed in boiling lead, how their sores smelled so wonderfully of holiness that people thought they were wearing perfume! After the last martyr is disposed of, we're back to the book learning, comparing various translations of the bible to prove that the word cannot be perverted!
