This is a beautifully written book. Barry's prose is always flavored with a wonderful poetry. The sense of place and the observation of the day to day is super. There's great subtlety to the telling of a tale where very little happens and yet everything is changed for the characters. However, Barry very neatly captures the somewhat "contrary" nature of the narrator and in doing so tinges the book with something unpleasant. As an early work thought, this is excellent.
