I had to read this book for my English Unit on The Dark Hero. However, to be perfectly honest Vathek isn't much of a hero. He's so self-indulgent and easily distracted from his quest that it's quite tedious to read. Also, a lot is packed into it and the book is very short, which makes reading it slightly confusing when so much is going on at the same time. I'm glad I read it, but in some parts it was quite boring, and it wasn't until the end that it got interesting and then well...it was over. The character of Vathek is also supposed to be autobiographical of the author, William Beckford, which also makes for an amusing read when you see the way that he portrays himself based on his own life. Read it if you've got the time, but otherwise I wouldn't say it's a great book.
