slow and overly self-aware. not fond of the over-reaching to include yet more notable 19th century figures. most of the passages are beautifully written. some of the passages make me wish publishing companies bothered with editing. the whole hawthorne in the woods scene? cut it. a decent book that maybe could have been great with judicious and thoughtful pruning. i'm glad to have read this; my disappointments mainly stem from feeling like it sits on the cusp of being so much better. where moby dick made me long to see a whale, this book makes me long for the cape.
