This is an interesting take on urban fantasy. The conceit of how the fantastic creatures got to Atlanta is different, and I liked the characterization. Sometimes the magic system was introduced too fast, and there were times when how to use it was "instinctual" which sometimes seems like a cop-out to me, but overall the story was tight and the action was good. The author is not afraid to hurt her characters (physically and emotionally), and I'm sure in future books we will see them grow and change. I picked this book up because it was a bargain through Amazon, and I'm glad I did. I'll keep an eye out for the other books, though in this economy it'll be a while before I go on another Amazon binge.
