it was amazing

This was an outstanding book! Some parts just left me stunned - not only the writing but the amazing details the author provided and how he made it all seem so interesting. I never thought reading the history of the hickory nut in North America or an analysis of dirt in the Amazon ("terra preta") could be made into such page-turning drama! This was one of the best books I have read in quite some time. One could call it paradigm shifting but I think what it really represents is a journalist who - through excellent research - has deftly tapped into the shift in thinking that has swirled through anthropological academic circles in the last 10-20 years regarding the people and sophistication of cultures in the pre-1491 "New World."
