"Food memoir" isn't a genre I would have considered to have much appeal (to me), but the combination of a culinary tour of New Orleans and author Sara Roahen's engaging story of how she became a "born again New Orleanian" makes Gumbo Tales an irresistible winner. Reading it while I'm in town has been a bonus since it helped us discover a few new places that wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise, but it's a worthy read even if you never step foot in the Crescent City because she does a good job of sprinkling in key bits of historical and cultural anecdotes.
