A fast-paced, engrossing start to the Shadow Warriors series, which builds on Aztec mythology.

Carolina is a guardian, sworn to protect her family's secret as her parents did before her. She works her ranch alone, keenly regretting that a foolish choice to trust another years ago betrayed her family and cost them their lives.

Tomas is a Shadow Warrior, bound to serve the Aztec sun god. He has a wolf form as well as a human form, but as he rids the earth of demons, each kill takes with it some of his humanity. He and his fellow Warriors hope to find their spirit mates, who can renew them and ultimately save them.

As Tomas is tracking a particularly vicious demon-possessed mortal, he scents his long-sought spirit mate. His wolf is determined to track and destroy the evil, but his human side also longs to glimpse the woman he's almost lost hope of meeting. Both ends lead him to Carolina's ranch.

Carolina is startled but not frightened by the gorgeous wolf she finds on her property. Her animals are unusually restive though, and when she goes to investigate, she realizes she needs to do what she's promised to--destroy the evil threatening her property and her secret responsibility.

Ms. Hewitt packs quite a bit into this novella--setting the stage for more stories about these ancient warriors and their fascinating histories.
