I read Aryn Kyle's book of short stories, Boys and Girls Like You and Me: Stories, and LOVED it. Unfortunately,The God of Animals, however engaging, became an absolutely brutal depress-fest by the end.

I suppose if you're in the mood for seriously gritty barn life, go for it. Kyle's writing is solid, but the shut-in mother; drifting, controlling, yet distant, father; runaway married teen sister; dead girl as pretend best friend; poverty; animal brutality; and potential pedophile teacher as a love interest, was all a little much. I felt sick at the end.

I'll be on the lookout for more of her work, but my enthusiasm for her storytelling prowess has faded a little.

I'm giving it three stars, because I was continually engaged by the narrator's voice, but I'd be lying if I said I liked or enjoyed it overall. It was like a Russian novel of doom set in the American Southwest, with only the barest sliver of cloud covered sunshine illuminating the final pages.
