This is a hard review for me to write, y'all. I LOVED the first two books in this series. They were like nothing else I'd read, and I couldn't get enough. I loved that Colleen Houck was writing about something you don't see much in YA - Eastern mythology - but even the wicked mythology couldn't save this one for me, unfortunately.
First, let's talk about the awesome things in this book:
1. The pacing of this novel was so much better than the other 3. I remember buying Tiger's Voyage and gaping at the size of it. I mean, it could kill someone if you threw it at them. And the pacing of the first 3 books was laborious at times (although I'll be honest and say that it didn't bug me to read about all their meals and Kelsey's clothes - wasn't so good for my diet, though), but this one starts with a bang, keeps up the intensity, and ends with one too. I think people who found the first 3 slow will prefer this book's pacing.
2. THE COVER!!!

It's so pretty that it almost hurts my eyes. Splinter design team, I am very impressed.
3. I thought Houck handled the "chosen one" plot very well. Usually, I'm not into that kinda thing. (It's actually what kept me from loving Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.) But I think the fact that Ren, Kishan, and Kelsey all have a specific destiny was what made me prefer that plot device - the destiny, chosen one-ness was sort of shared all around, and that felt more natural.
4. To everyone that thought Kelsey was TSTL in book(s) 1 (and maybe 2), I give you kickbutt Kelsey who most certainly can take care of herself. I mean...wow. She turned into Zena, Warrior Princess in this book. This is another thing that sorta irks me - average girls turning into these Amazon warriors, but I actually totally bought it in this book...probably because of the supernatural assistance she got.
5. A lot of times in paranormal books, we get frustrated with characters who are in mortal danger but they talk about their feelings and get all romantic instead of worrying about how they're going to defend themselves. But this book wasn't like that AT ALL! There's not talking about feelings or any smooshiness when battle approaches. I liked that a lot!
Okay...nos for what I didn't care for as much.
OMG THE ROMANCE!!!

I like love triangles. I do. No, really. Edward/Jacob? Loved it. Peeta/Gale? Loved it. But Ren/Kishan? At first, I was really into it. But at this point, I'm over it.
Because there was so much quick pacing in this book, I felt like the character development really suffered. Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan really stay the same throughout this book - nothing changes in any of their relationships, no growth, no nothing. I wanted Ren and Kishan to FINALLY just come to the point where they can't stand each other anymore or they realize that Kelsey isn't worth fighting over. I wanted Kelsey to MAKE UP HER MIND. I wanted Kishan to see Kelsey mooning over Ren and be like, "Eff this. I'm done with you."
Unfortunately, none of this happened. It was just lots of angst and stolen glances between Kelsey and Ren...even after (view spoiler)
I get it now - the Kelsey/Ren thing. In Voyage I fought it because I just didn't understand why she would ever want to be with Ren while Kishan was around. But after reading Destiny, I can see that for whatever reason, she's into him and it's better for her to be with him instead of Kishan. I still don't get why any sane person would want to be with a guy that's so dramatic and angsty that he literally throws himself at your feet and begs you not to do something dangerous when THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF YOUR JOURNEY...but I digress.
The end. OMG the end.

We all know what's going to happen. (view spoiler)
But all I have to say is...

So many FEELS, guys. So many.
But at the end of the day, I'm just impressed with an author who can make me have that many feels. Colleen Houck has really done an incredible job of creating these characters that are really well-rounded and actualized, that readers fall in love with.
I love this story that she's crafted. It's pretty epic. Like in the literal sense. I applaud her for the amount of research that she's done, for writing something that nobody else is really doing, and for being basically awesome incarnate.
...but I just can't give your book 5 stars when you screw over my favorite character.
In defense of Kishan, I knock off 1 1/2 stars.

I'm wondering if that's a misprint. I'm just having a hard time believing that one of these books would be THAT short, you know?
I loooove the cover too! :) Colleen said that Destiny is longer than all of the others. Whoot whoot! Happy dance!
I love the cover, too! However, I wish it wasn't so long if the length is longer than the others. (Sorry to be a party pooper!) I've always wished that the writing was a little bit tighter and more thoroughly edited, and I felt that the third book could have had entire pages cut out of it.
But I do have to say that Colleen gets some of the best covers in the business! I'm excited!

Agreed about the length!! How could a book POSSIBLY be longer...unless you're George R.R. Martin or Diana Gabaldon?!
I totally agree. The beautiful covers were what drew me to the series in the first place :) I'm a hopeless for beautiful and amazing covers!
Erica (daydreamer) wrote: "Great review. I had big problems with the love triangle in this book too."Thanks, Erica! I'm just glad that the next book should have no love triangle. (At least, that's how she set it up at the end of this one.) I mean...I'm pretty pissed that (view spoiler), but I'll just be happy to have a non-conflicted Kelsey back.
I am so crazy about this review. I want to like it a million times. This book was IMMENSELY better than Voyage in that it's so much more readable. The pace is awesome and sucks you in, unlike Voyage (which I really had to push myself to finish). This book had me all excited to sneak away and read and let my kids watch copious amounts of television.
BUT THAT LOVE TRIANGLE. Wow, it needs to die. Everything's left exactly the way it was in Voyage. I agree...I am over Kishan/Kelsey. She doesn't deserve or appreciate him, and he should never be someone's #2 when he's that hot and all-around amazing. Ren is SO angsty, but like you, I get it. Kelsey's supposed to be with him, she'll NEVER appreciate Kishan like a sane woman would, so she should just go be with Ren and stop toying with Kishan. (Leave him for the rest of us!)
I DO love where Colleen's going with this. I was trying to figure out how this love triangle could have a happy ending, and I admit--I like what she has going with the whole (view spoiler)
Anyway, love your review, and I agree with everything. Thanks for putting it into such entertaining words. I thought Destiny was a vast improvement over Voyage but as you said, that love triangle really needed to die much sooner than it's going to. However, I LOVE where Colleen's going with this.
By the way, I loved the part where (view spoiler)

LOL! Thanks!
Okay, okay maybe you convinced me that Kishan (view spoiler)
I think what I was just really praying for (but knew would never happen) was for Kishan to wake up one morning, look at Kelsey, and be like, "Wow, you're totally not worth all this trouble. Ren can have you. Peace out." And then he would go become a millionaire somewhere, partying it up with Durga and all the other Hindu gods, and Ren and Kelsey would be poor because Ren wants to be a poet but he's too lousy to make any money doing it.
Now that's how I personally would have ended the series.
Moowahahahaha!

You know, people complain about YA heroines being all doormatty and not standing up for themselves when they're being mistreated by their amazingly hot love interest, and I hate that Kishan has become that. I HATE that Kelsey's being terrible to him, but he doesn't realize it and walk away. So I agree--I wish he'd made the choice to leave her, but I like that (view spoiler)
But yes, it would be awesome if Kishan was like, I am so out of here.

We don't know how it ends, so maybe Kishan will get his vengeance. Erm...I mean, he'll step aside so that Ren can have the girl. lol
And you're so right about him being like those girls that are doormats in regards to the love interest. Not cool. I don't want a doormat girl OR boy!
Is this just a hunch that this will happen or did it actually say in the book since im a bit confused when you said " We all know what's going to happen. [Durga needs a tiger, and Kishan will volunteer to be said tiger. Because Houck has been hinting at it from the beginning, with the way Durga shamelessly flirts with him. Because Kishan has proved himself throughout the entire series to be the most noble out of the three main characters. Because Kelsey is an idiot who doesn't realize a good thing when she has it. "
Melody wrote: "Is this just a hunch that this will happen or did it actually say in the book since im a bit confused when you said " We all know what's going to happen. [Durga needs a tiger, and Kishan will volun..."It actually happens in the book that (view spoiler). The rest I have predicted. But the galley doesn't include the last bit of the book (which is sorta irritating IMHO), so I guess we'll find out in September who becomes said tiger. I just thought it was fairly obvious because of the reasons I gave.
^ i agree. i have'nt read the book but from your review i would say that it's a pretty good prediction. i loved the stitch pcture btw it looks exactly like me throughout the series :D
i just finished reading an ARC of this book and i have to say i was peed when i found out it wasnt the whole book, but yup i had already figured out it will be kishan, and OMG the love triangle, soo over it. i just want them to wake up and see shes not worth it and walk away
awesome review!! i feel so much better knowing that as much as i love Colleen's books that other people were getting sick of the love triangle.
I don't get the whole Kishan is honorable thing--no matter what happened to Ren he never should have put the moves on Kelsey. Isn't that what got them turned into tigers to begin with? Kelsey's been the most annoying character ever--I only read the first three because I loved the mythology and the adventure Colleen put into the stories--about the only part of it I can say was brilliant. It's always been Kelsey and Ren to me and if Kishan has to sacrifice himself--I honestly think it's the best way for him to atone for what happened with him and Ren's fiancee and the last several centuries. I don't know if I'm in the minority about Kishan. But I have to say I'm so thankful you put these spoilers in this book. Because if Kishan actually proposes and Kelsey actually says yes...I'm not wasting my money. I'm not even going to waste my time. I'll read the 5th one in the bookstore when it eventually comes out.
Kishan had a really happy life and fell inlove with a Goddess for crying out loud, and married her!! I think that Colleen Houck found a really good way to give everybody a happy ending. I knew that she could not marry Kishan and I knew that they were not going to live in some big house together with her with one brother while the other just watched. I knew that one of them had to leave the picture and I knew that i would have freaked out if it were Ren. Everybody deserved a happily ever after, but they could not all be together for it. But yes I agree with you Kelsey is an idiot. She oushed Ren away in the first book, then when she tried to forget Ren she just led Kishan on and almost married him "thinkning" that she could love him like Ren. was she insane!!!! How could you be inlove with one yet be with another, I knew that she was gonna break Kishan's heart seeing that she was still inlove with Ren, sheshould not have led him on like that. UGH!! no matter how much i wanted Ren and Kelsey to be together, Kells was a complete IDIOT through out the series.

"

I've been saying these books should be shorter, but I was thinking more around 400 pages. =)
