Another absorbing tale set in rural Texas and in a Mexican town near the border. This one is populated with ranchhands; among them Billy Parham and John Grady Cole who suffered misfortunes in the first two installments of the trilogy. Well, they don't fare so well here either. Again, it was difficult to read through the sections dealing with a destruction of a pack of dogs that had been killing cattle to survive. I can't say that the bit of philosophy at the end gave any clarity to the tale. Perhaps, the world is as it seems to be - filled with both cruelty and kindness and there is no pattern to life that we ourselves can discern.
