** spoiler alert **
Penny is a young girl struggling to understand her family history. She lives with her mom and her grandparents, but spends a lot of time with the big Italian side of her family as well. Her father was Italian, but died when she was little. Her mother rarely talks about her father and never discusses his death. This frustrates Penny and although she spends great amounts of time with her father’s family, Nonny, Uncle Dominic, Uncle Nunzio, and many many more, they don’t give her clear answers either. Penny spends a lot of time with her cousin and best friend, Frankie. Unfortunately, the two have a way of finding mischief easily. One day, while they are looking for a buried treasure in her Nonny’s basement, Penny suffers a gruesome and painful accident. Her arm is actually yanked through a wringer which is a machine they used for drying clothes before they invented driers. It crushed her arm; grinded it like meat. Luckily, her arm was saved and in the process, so was her family! The accident reunited her mom with her dad’s side of the family since after his death, they never spoke. And Penny finally found out the truth about how her father died.
