Steve Martin is one of my comedy idols, so I was excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Written in the dry, spare manner just like his other work, Martin discusses how he evolved into both a performer and the most famous stand-up in the country for a time in the 70s, before transitioning into movies. He details his process of moving from comedy writing on tv shows, to realizing his jokes don't need to to have punchlines or make sense, and how he continually refined his act until he knew it was time to give it up. It's a great book about the work he put in to make himself successful through the discipline of refining and sometimes abandoning material. He also offered more personal information than I would have thought, but nothing terribly salacious. Highly recommended.
