So I must say this fantasy YA novel is so very well done and crafted in such a way that each chapter begins with an excerpt from classic stories on reading or journeying such that it leaves youth (at me who hasn't read for instance, The Princess Bride!) with an interest and bibliography to follow of books I'd like to read. It is similar in theory to the Neverending Story wherein we can enter the books but what if the creatures and villians *come out* to find you?
On a geeky aside, I worked at a well-known children's bookstore and Cornelia Funke used to come in all the time for signings or to shop with her kids and I would geekily tell her everytime I'd sold one of her books, as if that wasn't happening thousands of times everyday. Well, if you're not familiar, Cornelia is like the J.K. Rowling of Germany and Dragon Rider sold 2 million copies in a few months. She was always so gracious and conversational everytime she came in.
