it was ok
bookshelves: urban-fantasy, paranormal-romance
Read in September, 2012

This is a paranormal romance with some urban fantasy elements. The heroine is a 25 year old tattoo artist (Riley) who lives in Savannah, GA, with her 15 year old brother, Seth. After her mother was killed, they were both taken in by a Gullah grandparent-age couple (the Preacher and Estelle) who remain important in their life. The story starts with Seth and his friends making trouble in a graveyard. They accidentally release something evil into the city which starts to affect Seth. Riley goes the Preacher for help, and he takes her to the Dupre's, the city's resident vampire clan. Eli, the eldest son, is assigned to be Riley's body guard, though he doesn't so much guard as ravish, well and often. Eventually they get Seth back, but not before a gruesome battle and the death of a rogue vampire.

I thought this book was ok, but a little heavy on the attitude. Riley goes on and on about how she's seen the dark side. She sounds like a spoiled teen trying to get attention when that passage repeats for the 3rd time in 3 chapters. It's not foreshadowing if you are pounding the reader over the head with it! A lot of time was spent on the romance side of the novel - not nearly enough on the urban fantasy side, at least for my tastes. There's also a lot of time spent on Goth/punk fashion. Cute, but not interesting reading for me. The writing seemed immature for the adult audience this book is marketed to. I'm not interested in the rest of this series.
