I had looked forward to reading this book as a swashbuckling/intrigue/romance in the style of Dumas, but with more historical detail. I think it fulfilled those requirements, but, on the whole, I was disappointed. There was far too much description of battlefields and people covered in vomit, excrement and maggots. I'm not squeamish, but I got tired of the repetitious description of these scenes. War is hell, I think we get it. I also began to get a strange inkling that the author imagined himself in the role of his main character - Mattias Tannahauser -and this added a bizarre component to my thoughts concerning the story. I think this is supposed to be the first book of the trilogy and I might give the second a whirl if he places it in an interesting setting. Bottom line: it's a long book, if you don't like it, drop it.
