Snorkle's review
The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper
Will Stanton doesn't think that he is anyone special, but that quickly fades on his 11th birthday when he discovers that he is the Sign-Seeker, the last of the immortal Old Ones and that it is his job to find the six signs of the Light. As Will's powers grow and he starts learning more about the struggle with the Light and the Dark he is thrown into battle that has been fought for centuries.
This book was darker and had an older main character then the first book in the Dark is Rising Sequence. While the first book had a couple main characters this book only had one, which I liked slightly better. I was surprised to find that the first three characters that you met in the first book were not in this book at all, they weren't even mentioned, which made you wonder if maybe every book in this series was going to have different characters. It was a Newbery Honor book, but I didn't think that it was the best book I have ever read and maybe not even worth the Honor.

yeah, I've never read anything by Susan Cooper before, but I picked it up at a yardsale & couldn't resist. I know you think it didn't deserve the newberry-honor, but I think it did. Her writing style creates vivid emotion & pictures without being flowery or distracting. The story is original and slightly scary, without resorting to cliches. The characters are, well, normal. They aren't like ridiculously powerful ( well sort of but do you know what I mean?) as in, they aren't this undefeatable enemy, they're really formidible, but they keep you guessing... wow that last part was really confusing. I think I'll stop now. My comment is getting downright unwieldy.
hahah, whatever meredith - we're writers, I think we're allowed to be downright longwinded! whoo hoo for long comments! yeah, I wasn't terribly impressed with this book, but I did like it...it just wasnt' one of those "wow - this book is TOTALLY awesome" books....you know? have you seen the movie they did of this, called "The Seeker"? I wouldn't recommend it, the only good points it has is that it is a pretty action-y movie without the PG-13 rating...but at the same time, I thought that it had a couple scenes that were pretty scary, I don't think that I would have wanted to watch it as a young child....On a completely different side note: I have decided to read all the Caldecotts! well, at least, as many as I can...I didn't realize that I had so many childrens book that I absolutely loved and they were Caldecotts...so I thought to myself, being the totally wild and obsessive person that I am, "Why not read them all!?!?!?" I think it took me over an hour to type in all the names and add them to my to-read shelf...and now I'm going to put some on hold at the library..........
really? I thought they just did a movie of this book. Maybe it's just in production now. Heehee. I'm pretty busy, so I don't have time for a longer comment. We'll have to talk sometime while I'm on vacation so that I won't get totally bored.
yeah, you can look it up on IMDB.com, but they did a movie based on The Dark Is Rising and named it The Seeker, it came out on DVD like a couple months ago? All I know is that I saw it and it was totally different from the book.hahaha, yeah, I hear you on that - just name the time and place and I'll be ready to talk...hahahah, well, I already know the place, my place and my cell phone...hahah, hey, if you are using one of your parents phones you could give me the number and I could add it to our top 10 and it would be a free call for me (I think I have to add it the day before I call or it won't count, something like that)...or we could just do it on the weekend sometime, I have family coming up this weekend, so this one won't work....I have to clean my room today, blah....
So far, I have read 16 Caldecott Medals and 16 Caldecott Honors, pretty good ey?
