** spoiler alert **
Reasons why I love Little Women:
1. The bond of the March family. As the only girl in a family of five brothers, how jealous I am of the March sisters. (As, I'm sure, Jo would be jealous of me.) And what better examples of loving parents are there than Mr. and Mrs. March?
2. Josephine March, a forward-thinking, humorous, intelligent heroine who I rank with the likes of Elizabeth Bennet. Jo is awesome, despite one MAJOR flaw. (See below.)
Reasons why I hate Little Women:
1. Stupid Jo! How can she resist Laurie - a charming, handsome young man who worships the ground she walks on??? I have always been so frustrated with her for rejecting him. I remember hearing, and it might not be true, that Alcott would read Little Women to her family while she was writing it. She had originally planned to have Jo and Laurie end up together, but her family expected that to happen, so she changed her mind. Then, to add insult to injury, she married him to the bratty little sister.
2. So, it's one thing to deny Laurie, but then to marry Jo to some dodgy old professor? Yuck! I mean, foreign guys can be hot, but at least pick someone with a nice accent - French, Spanish, English. German?
I hear that Alcott was quite an ornery old maid, that children were so disappointed to learn that she was the author of the book that they loved. I feel an affinity for her because I think I'm heading down the same road. Ornery old maid, minus the writing talent. :)
